There are a few reasons that vehicles may require either a full head service or a cylinder head replacement. Some of these common causes are as follows;
Leaking head gasket, allowing exhaust gasses into the cooling system. This can most often be rectified with a full head service and reassembling with a new VRS gasket kit & head bolts etc. When the cylinder head is serviced, if a crack in the cylinder head is found, the head will require replacement.
Crack in the cylinder head, allowing exhaust gasses into the cooling system. This can most often be rectified with a replacement cylinder head and reassembling with a new VRS gasket kit & head bolts etc. Sometimes, it is recommended by specialists to replace the engine instead. This occurs due to three main reasons;
The cracked cylinder has been left for too long and caused additional damage
It is a known fault for that particular vehicle.
The vehicle has very high mileage.
Tee Kay Test:
A tee kay test is a most frequently used way to determine if exhaust gasses are entering the cooling system. This test is mostly carried out when a car presents itself with overheating symptoms and /or abnormalities in heat cycles.Note– a tee kay test can not always prove an issue with the head gasket or cylinder head if the leak or crack is only quite small, which can sometimes make diagnosing the cooling system issue somewhat tricky.
